· Diplomatarium Norvegicum (Records from the Middle Ages.  Help available in English.)
· GeoNet Name Server (National Imagery and Mapping Agency.  Find geographical coordinates of your farm or bygd in Norway.)
· Geomatikk (Find grandparents’ farm.  Fantastic online map service from Bravida Geomatikk AS.  In Norwegian, but easy for an English speaker to use.  First, click GeoWEB.  Then click on the map of Norway at a point of interest to you.  That zooms you in some.  Keep clicking all the way down to the farm level.  In some cases, you can even see buildings.)
· Matrikkelutkastet av 1950 (Land tax records from 1950.  Excellent source of current farm and sub-farm names.)
· Matrikkelutkastet av 1886 (Same, but for 1886.)

· Statistics Norway Search for Names (In English.  How common is your name?  Is a given name male or female?)
· Terraserver (Find grandparents’ farm.  Same as GEOWEB above except for U.S.  You start with a place name, though, instead of a map.  Satellite photos are even available for some areas.  I can see our house, camping trailer and canoe!).
· University of Tromsø's Censuses for 1865, 1875 and 1900

Mailing lists and discussion groups:
There are two primarily English-language genealogy email lists of interest, one for all of Norway and the other for Trøndelag, the region near Trondheim where Stadsbygd is located.  The people on these lists are friendly and very helpful.  Both lists are quite active and generate many emails per day, so you may wish to subscribe in “digest mode” which waits until several emails have been sent, then sends them all to you in one large email.  Both lists also have “newbe” information to help get you started researching your ancestors.  To subscribe, send an email to Norway-L-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or Norway-D-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode), or to Trondelag-L-request@rootsweb.com or Trondelag-D-requeste@rootsweb.com, with the word subscribe in the body of the message.  Put in no additional text (it’s a machine and doesn’t care if you say thank you) and turn off your automatic signature file.  You do not need anything in the subject line, either.  An online discussion group (like email, only everything is on the web) exists for Fosen (the peninsula in Trøndelag where Stadsbygd is located) genealogy.  The list is called Fosenslekt.  Although the prevailing language is Norwegian, many of its regulars will respond to requests posted in English.

Ancestors From Norway (John Føllesdal’s site.  Probably the best genealogical site in English about Norway.)
Bygdebøker (Norwegian parish history) guide and list from the University of North Dakota Libaray. The UND collection does not circulate, however bygdebøker can be borrowed from many other libraries (e.g., University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin) through inter-library loan. An indispensable resource for researching your family history.  All bygdebøker are written in Norwegian.
