Interested in what given names
your ancestors used? Looking for a name for a new baby? Here is a snapshot of
given or first names in my database when it held just under 9,000 names (as of
27.7.2003 it had 20,350). Statistically,
the distribution should hold.
The following given names
have a frequency >=20 in my staværinger database. The male names are
from the 14th (1), 15th (4), 16th (86), 17th (398), 18th (872), 19th (1,309)
and 20th (2,054) centuries. The female names are from the 15th (2), 16th (14),
17th (226), 18th (827), 19th (1,243) and 20th (1,927) centuries.
Some names (e.g., Karen)
are evenly distributed across the centuries. Others are more popular in some
centuries than others. For example, all 23 males named Odd were born in the
20th century. The most popular male name was Ole, but only 35 of the 468 (7%)
males with that name were born in the 20th century, even though 43% of the
males in the database were born in the 20th century.
In the charts below, the
personal names are presented both individually and combined with similar names.
For example, Ole and Ola, Anne and Anna, and Beret and Berit are pronounced
very much alike in Norwegian.
